12/29 Annual Meeting Location to Change
Due to the current economic climate, the State
Bar of Nevada has opted to move the 2009 Annual Meeting, previously set to
take place in Hawaii, to a local Nevada location. The state bar places a
high importance on supporting the local Nevada economy during these tough
times.
The final location is yet to be determined. Keep
an eye on the E-Newsletter and future issues of Nevada Lawyer
magazine for additional
details.

12/15 Young Lawyers
Section Coat Drive
The Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of
Nevada is asking for your help in making their
Coat Closet Drive
a success. The section is collecting cash and/or new coats for the children
at Veterans Elementary School. Without your donation, many of these children
will not have new coats this winter. A $25 donation will buy a warm coat,
$100 will buy four and, if you can get your firm to contribute, a $500
donation will put 20 in-need kids in brand-new coats! The goal is to provide
every student at Veterans Elementary School with a new coat.
Make your checks payable to the State Bar of
Nevada and mail them to Laura Granier, Lionel Sawyer & Collins, 50 W.
Liberty St., Suite 1100, Reno, NV 89501. If you would like to purchase a
coat yourself, please contact Megan Bowen for size and gender needed.
Contact Megan Bowen,
megan.bowen@hdfsi.com, or Laura Granier,
lgranier@lionelsawyer.com, with any questions. Act fast – it’s getting
cold outside!
12/05 IOLTA Added to
Emergency Coverage Offered by the FDIC
The Federal Deposit
Insurance Corp. (FDIC) announced in November that effective immediately,
client funds deposited in Interest on Lawyer Trust Accounts (IOLTA),
regardless of amount, are
eligible for full deposit insurance
coverage under the Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program (TLGP) through
December 31, 2009. Additional information can be found at
the FDIC’s website.
The FDIC adopted
the TLGP program on Oct. 13 because of disruptions in the credit market, and
amended the program to include IOLTA after receiving a groundswell of
commentary from the ABA, National Organization of Bar Counsel, IOLTA
foundations, legal aid providers, attorneys and other concerned parties.
Lawyers should note
that banks do have to opt in for this coverage, and pay a fee for the added
insurance. Questions about a specific bank’s participation should be
directed to a bank representative. The FDIC is also continually
updating its website with
information about FDIC insurance.
12/01 Supreme Court Rule Changes
On November 17, the Nevada Supreme Court issued
ADKT 418, amending the Eighth Judicial District Court Rules. Eight rules
were amended, so district practitioners should review the changes. You can
download AKDT 418
to see the changes, or visit the
Supreme Court's website.
