The State Bar Board of Governors mandates all vacancies on
State Bar committees must be announced in Nevada Lawyer
and on www.nvbar.org to allow for maximum participation by
its members.
Applications, along with letters of interest and resumes
are being accepted for the vacancy listed below

Clark County Indigent Defense Selection and Appointed Committee -
Expanded
Clark County’s Office
of Appointed Counsel (AOC) is looking to expand the newly appointed
committee (Indigent Defense Selection and Appointed Committee)
formed to assist with the assignment of qualified private
defense attorneys to appointed criminal cases. Those currently named
to the committee include representatives from: Nevada Attorneys for
Criminal Justice, Federal Public Defenders, Public Defenders, Latino
Bar Association, National Bar Association, Clark County Legal
Services and Office of Appointed Services.
The committee selects qualified
candidates to fill the available appointment positions annually, as
well as the selects the top candidates to fill the juvenile
delinquency appointments. In reviewing candidate applications,
committee members solicit input from judges and others familiar with
the practice of criminal defense, review any complaints from clients
and the history of participation in training of each attorney
receiving appointments to determine eligibility and continuing
participation.
The committee is to
be expanded include lawyers with varied backgrounds within the legal
community. The State Bar of Nevada Board of Governors will appoint a
State Bar member to this committee for a one year appointment –
through July 2009.
No member of the
committee may have a pecuniary interest in the outcome of the
attorney selection process or be in any way legally or financially
related to any attorney whose qualifications may be evaluated. No
prosecutors or judges may be members of the committee. Those seeking
appointment to the committee should have some knowledge of the
criminal defense system, although this is not a requirement. Interested
applications should have interest in
the integrity of indigent criminal
defense. Attorneys in
private practice are preferred. It is expected that the committee
will meet on a quarterly basis.

Advertising Review
Committee - Northern Nevada
The State Bar needs volunteers to
review lawyer advertisements under the new advertising rules. The
Volunteer (Lawyer Advertising) Advisory Committees have immediate
openings in the North and South for interested lawyers and lay
persons.
These working Committees shall meet at
least once per month to (1) review all advertisements submitted
pursuant to rule RPC 7.2A as amended and (2) render advance advisory
opinions upon request. Because review & communication will largely
be accomplished though electronic mediums, Committee members should
be proficient with computers, email, and Internet use.

Vacancy on
Board of Bar Examiners
Purpose: The
Board of Bar Examiners is comprised of fourteen attorney members,
including the Chair. The Board’s responsibilities include writing
and grading the Bar examination questions and overseeing the
administration of the two bar exams. The Board works closely with
the Supreme Court of Nevada and the State Bar Board of Governors in
formulating rules and procedures for admission to the State Bar of
Nevada.

Nevada Lawyer Editorial Board
Need members from Rural Counties
This working committee produces Nevada Lawyer, the
official legal publication of the State Bar of Nevada, 12 times per year. Members also help
generate, solicit and select articles to be run in each issue. Applicants
should be prepared to participate either personally or by phone in person at least
6 meetings per year, to volunteer as part of a 3-member team which will become the
"issue editor" of Nevada Lawyer three times per year, and to occasionally
contribute articles. Writing, editing, journalism and proofreading skills are necessary.

Continuing Legal Education Seminars
Committee
This working committee
produces live seminars, self-study audiotape programs and online “webcasts.”
Members of this committee should be prepared to participate in 3
in-person committee meetings a year and take responsibility for the overall planning
of 3 seminars per year. Members of this committee will assist in developing the core
curriculum, developing specific program agendas, recruiting speakers, and helping
to ensure deadlines are met.

Lawyer Referral and Information Service Committee (LRIS)
Purpose:
The LRIS Committee ensures the general public is assisted by providing a way
by which persons in need of legal services may be referred to a qualified
member of the State Bar of Nevada or any other qualifying public service
agency, and assisting the Lawyer Referral and Information Service in
achieving such purpose.
Openings/Term Length:
One (1) opening. Three-year term, with 1-6 meetings per year.

Northern Nevada Disciplinary Board
Requirements: Appointees should be able to
volunteer a minimum of one full business day per
month; specific hearing panel assignations are
flexible and will work around your schedule. For the
applicable rules of procedure, see SCR 99 through SCR
123. For the Rules of Professional Conduct, see SCR
150-203.5.
