STATE BAR OF NEVADA COMMITTEE CONSIDERS MANY CHANGES TO ETHICS RULES

by: Rob W. Bare, Bar Counsel

Steven B. Wolfson, Esq. is the appointed chairman of the State Bar of Nevada’s “Ethics 2000” Committee which was recently formed to address changes made to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct by the American Bar Association (ABA). In large part, the Nevada Rules of Professional Conduct (Supreme Court Rules 150-203.5) are based upon the ABA Model Rules. In an initiative called Ethics 2000, the ABA first began to consider rule changes in 1997-1998 and recently finalized a set of new Model Rules.

Under the chairmanship of Steve Wolfson, the State Bar will now consider whether the Nevada Rules should be amended using the ABA changes as a basis for discussion.

The Committee held its first meeting on April 10, 2003 and hopes to have a final recommendation prepared by late summer 2003.  The report will be published and public hearings conducted in Las Vegas and northern Nevada prior to the Board of Governors  filing final recommendations to the Supreme Court.

If you’ve ever thought, “I really wish they’d change that rule!”  NOW IS YOUR CHANCE.   Please visit our website, www.nvbar.org, and look for the “ETHICS 2000” section.  We’ve posted the redline version of the ABA Model Rule changes, a compare/contrast chart between the Model Rules and Nevada’s Rules, and the contact information for your Nevada Ethics 2000 Committee.  Continue to check in: additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

Please feel free to provide your input to the Committee’s staff contact via e-mail kristinam@nvbar.org or, if you prefer, contact me or any of the Committee members listed on the website.
