Dialogue on Freedom

This program was designed and developed by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and promoted by the American Bar Association. Dialogue on Freedom is designed to foster a better understanding of fundamental American values and the universal moral principles that all free people share. The format is one of discussion, facilitated by a local attorney or judge who poses questions or concepts to keep youth engaged in and discussing the issues. The dialogue can run from 60 to 90 minutes, and is geared to high school age students. There is a brief reading assignment for the participants prior to the dialogue presentation.

Law Day

This annual program, held on May 1, is designed to recognize the legal profession. Activities vary from year to year and are developed around a national theme. Law Day events are promoted locally by the State Bar of Nevada's Young Lawyers Section and local county or regional bar associations through school and community groups.

High School Mock Trial Competition

The State Bar of Nevada coordinates the High School Mock Trial Competition. Teams of six to eight students take on the roles of lawyer and witnesses in a mock trial. Local attorneys and teachers coach the teams for the competition, held at district, state, and national levels.

Mock Trial Demonstrations

Local country bar associations provide attorneys to serve as lawyers and judges for mock trial demonstrations. Selected students serve as defendants, plaintiffs, and witnesses. These demonstrations are held in conjunction with Law Day (May 1).

We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution

Elementary through high school students study the Constitution, with emphasis on the Bill of Rights. Simulated congressional hearings are held as a culminating activity. Competition is available at district, state, and national levels.

Project Citizen

This civic education program is for students in 6th through 9th grades. Students explore public policy in relation to identified problems in their community, and prepare a portfolio describing the problem, identifying alternative solutions, selecting the best resolution, and formulating an action plan. Competition is available at district, state, and national levels.

Community Service Learning

Service learning enhances students' education and development through active participation. Activities stimulate individual growth and skill building, along with group cooperation. Youth improve their self image, develop needed life skills, and make meaningful contributions to their schools and communities. The program incorporates what is learned in the classroom and allows students to apply their skills and knowledge to practical situations.

Community Works (Teens, Crime and the Community)

An interactive, user-friendly crime prevention curriculum for 6th  through  12th grade age groups.  The program teaches youth how to examine violence and law related issues in the context of their schools and communities and apply what they learn to real-life circumstances. Students/youth will participate in lessons on such topics as handguns, substance abuse and drug trafficking, gangs, shoplifting, hate crimes, dating violence, conflict management, vandalism and others. Youth will also become engaged in action projects for their schools or communities; these will be projects which enable youth to put their learning to good use.

 Youth Act

An empowering program designed to help develop necessary leadership skills in youth to help them advocate for meaningful changes in their communities.  Groups of youth will work with adults to identify problems within the community and will formulate a plan of action to bring about change that will benefit the community at large. Youth will develop skills for life that will enable them to be leaders in their community for years to come.
