Dialogue on Freedom
This program was designed and developed by Supreme Court
Justice Anthony Kennedy and promoted by the American Bar Association.
Dialogue on Freedom is designed to foster a better understanding of
fundamental American values and the universal moral principles that all free
people share. The format is one of discussion, facilitated by a local
attorney or judge who poses questions or concepts to keep youth engaged in
and discussing the issues. The dialogue can run from 60 to 90 minutes, and
is geared to high school age students. There is a brief reading assignment
for the participants prior to the dialogue presentation.
Law Day
This annual program, held on May 1, is designed to
recognize the legal profession. Activities vary from year to year and are
developed around a national theme. Law Day events are promoted locally by
the State Bar of Nevada's Young Lawyers Section and local county or regional
bar associations through school and community groups.
High School Mock Trial Competition
The State Bar of Nevada coordinates the High School Mock
Trial Competition. Teams of six to eight students take on the roles of
lawyer and witnesses in a mock trial. Local attorneys and teachers coach the
teams for the competition, held at district, state, and national levels.
Mock Trial Demonstrations
Local country bar associations provide attorneys to serve
as lawyers and judges for mock trial demonstrations. Selected students serve
as defendants, plaintiffs, and witnesses. These demonstrations are held in
conjunction with Law Day (May 1).
We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution
Elementary through high school students study the
Constitution, with emphasis on the Bill of Rights. Simulated congressional
hearings are held as a culminating activity. Competition is available at
district, state, and national levels.
Project Citizen
This civic education program is for students in 6th
through 9th grades. Students explore public policy in relation to identified
problems in their community, and prepare a portfolio describing the problem,
identifying alternative solutions, selecting the best resolution, and
formulating an action plan. Competition is available at district, state, and
national levels.
(both We the People and Project Citizen are programs of
and are funded by the Center for Civic Organization)
Community Service Learning
Service learning enhances students' education and
development through active participation. Activities stimulate individual
growth and skill building, along with group cooperation. Youth improve their
self image, develop needed life skills, and make meaningful contributions to
their schools and communities. The program incorporates what is learned in
the classroom and allows students to apply their skills and knowledge to
practical situations.
Community Works (Teens, Crime and the Community)
An interactive, user-friendly crime prevention
curriculum for 6th through 12th grade age groups.
The program teaches youth how to examine violence and law related issues in
the context of their schools and communities and apply what they learn to
real-life circumstances. Students/youth will participate in lessons on such
topics as handguns, substance abuse and drug trafficking, gangs,
shoplifting, hate crimes, dating violence, conflict management, vandalism
and others. Youth will also become engaged in action projects for their
schools or communities; these will be projects which enable youth to put
their learning to good use.
Youth Act
An empowering program designed to help develop
necessary leadership skills in youth to help them advocate for meaningful
changes in their communities. Groups of youth will work with adults to
identify problems within the community and will formulate a plan of action
to bring about change that will benefit the community at large. Youth will
develop skills for life that will enable them to be leaders in their
community for years to come.
