The State Bar of Nevada offers a free, non-profit, Lawyer
Referral and Information Service (LRIS) for the community. It’s
an outstanding resource when you feel you need an attorney but
you’re not sure whom to turn to. Each year, LRIS
refers over 28,000 people to panel
attorneys.
If you need legal help, you’ll be referred to an appropriate
Nevada attorney. Over 250 lawyers participate in the LRIS
program, offering their services in 30 broad areas of law and 83
subcategories. To participate in LRIS, the attorneys must be
active members of the State Bar of Nevada, in good standing, and
have liability insurance.
LRIS attorneys agree not to charge LRIS clients more than $45
for an initial consultation. As such, using LRIS could save you money.
Sometimes after talking with LRIS, people discover that they don’t
need an attorney after all. Since dealing with the law entails
many difficult and technical issues, LRIS attempts to inform and
educate each caller within the parameters of the law.
The State Bar offers a series of
13 free brochures, most of which
are available in English and Spanish.
They are designed to help the public answer the most common
legal questions related to subjects like bankruptcy, divorce,
DUI, real estate law, consumer law, personal injury, civil rights
law
and other subjects. The brochures are available at various
public service agencies, Nevada courthouses and at the State
Bar's offices in Las Vegas and Reno.
Is there a charge for using the Lawyer Referral & Information
Service?
There is no charge for using LRIS. It is a free, non-profit,
public service.
What's the phone number for LRIS?
The
phone number is (702) 382-0504. There is also a toll-free number
for Nevada residents outside of Las Vegas, and that number is 1
(800) 789-5747. Individuals calling from outside Nevada must
dial (702) 382-0504.
How does LRIS operate?
When
you call the LRIS, an assistant will ask you a series of questions
to determine what type of attorney you may need. If it is determined you do
need legal assistance, you will be given the name and telephone
number of an attorney who accepts cases in the area of law which
covers your issue. A confirmation of the referral will be
mailed to both you and the attorney. If the attorney is not able
to assist you, you may call the LRIS for additional referrals.
What if I can't afford an attorney?
All
LRIS attorneys are private attorneys and will arrange their fee
with you. If you cannot afford to pay an attorney's regular
fees, LRIS will either attempt to prequalify you for a reduced fee
attorney or refer you to another legal services agency. Reduced
fee attorneys may charge no more than $25 for the initial
consultation, and they agree to charge no more than $75 per hour
thereafter.
Are LRIS attorneys qualified?
Over 250
lawyers participate in the LRIS program, offering their
services in 30 broad areas of law and 83 subcategories. To
participate in the LRIS, the attorneys must be active members of the
State Bar of Nevada in good standing and have liability
insurance. Attorneys choose the practice area panels from which
they will accept cases. A referral to an attorney who has
indicated his or her willingness to accept cases in a particular
area of law, however, does not mean LRIS, the State
Bar of Nevada, or any other agency, board or committee has certified
said attorney as a specialist or expert in the indicated field of law.
Additionally, an LRIS referral does not mean that a certain
attorney is any more competent than any other attorney. All
callers must make their own independent investigation and
evaluation of any lawyer being considered.
