Issue Editor’s Column

Brent L. Ryman, Editorial Board

While watching an episode of Ken Burns’ new documentary The War, I was reminded of an Ernie Pyle quote attempting to convey the combat fatigue of the First Army’s ill-fated and seemingly never-ending action in the Hurtgen Forest. “The worst experience of all,” Pyle explained, “is just the accumulated blur, and the hurting vagueness of being too long in the lines . . . .”

Although I’ve often felt the quote lends itself to those of us engaged in the business of litigation, the truth is that there is no comparison between our daily, professional battles and the service of the men and women who have sacrificed to allow us to endeavor toward success at life in America.

With that in mind, and with another Veteran’s Day fast approaching, this issue provides an insight into the lives a few veteran members of our State Bar. In addition to the thought-provoking interview with Senior Judge Larry Sage from Sparks-- a long-time active duty and reserve member of our nation’s armed forces, now volunteering in Afghanistan-- the magazine also features a number of stories from members of the bar who first discovered Nevada through their military training and service. These attorneys who came and stayed are a reminder of what this great state has to offer, in the realms of our personal and professional lives. This issue also includes an article on the substance and implementation of USERRA, which will help you and your clients reincorporate active service members into their occupations upon their eagerly-anticipated return. I certainly hope you enjoy this issue.
