YOUNG LAWYERS
A TIME FOR GIVING THANKS
BY JASMINE K. MEHTA, YOUNG LAWYERS CHAIR
With the Veterans Day holiday and Thanksgiving both occurring in November, this is the month for reflecting on and appreciating those things in your life that bring you joy. Being able to practice law is a privilege, and one for which I am very grateful. Being involved in the Young Lawyers Section is another opportunity for which I must give thanks, as it allows me to give back to my community.
One of the events the Young Lawyers Section puts together-- the one which provides the most impact in terms of monetary donations-- is the annual golf tournament. We organize and host this event every year in northern Nevada. We have also organized tournaments in southern Nevada, but not on an annual basis. The YLS Council approves a charity every year– the charity often depends on the choice of the person chairing the event– to which a large portion of the tournament’s proceeds are donated. The remaining money, after expenses, goes back into the YLS to fund our other community service projects.
The 11th Annual Sagebrush Scramble took place on May 18, 2007, at the Resort at Red Hawk. I would like to thank the many sponsors of that tournament:
- The Resort at Red Hawk
- Fahrendorf, Viloria, Oliphant & Oster, LLP
- Country Insurance & Financial Services
- Lemons, Grundy & Eisenberg
- Jones Vargas
- Lewis and Roca LLP
- Molezzo Court Reporters
- Georgeson Angaran Chtd.
- Barnard, Vogler & Co., CPAs
- McDonald Carano Wilson LLP
- Reno Carson Messenger
- Kimberly L. Bolin – Wells Fargo Private Mortgage Banker
- Silverman, Decaria & Kattelman, Chtd.
- Sport Clips
The Sagebrush Scramble could never take place without the dedicated volunteers who spend less time on their billable hours in order to round up sponsors and golfers. I would especially like to thank Scott Gilles for organizing the Scramble for two years running. His dedication is outstanding and has resulted in significant contributions to CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, which provides trained community volunteers to serve as advocates looking out for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court proceedings.
The next Sagebrush Scramble will be held in mid-May, 2008. If you would like to be involved in planning and organizing the 12th Annual Sagebrush Scramble, or a YLS Golf Tournament in Las Vegas, please contact me at jmehta@lrlaw.com. It’s a great way to meet people, enjoy a day of golf, and help out a charitable organization as well as the YLS’s numerous community service programs. I look forward to hearing from you!
