In an economy where more and more people find themselves facing foreclosures and tax issues, there is a large need for attorneys with financial skills; Las Vegas attorney Cort Arlint fits that bill perfectly. Arlint, who became a certified public accountant (CPA) in 2007, decided being an accountant wasn’t for him and opted to attend law school. Arlint graduated and passed the bar in 2010 and has been using his accounting know-how and legal skills to help folks facing foreclosures and tax issues. Once a month, Arlint speaks to people and then consults with them, free of charge, to determine if they have tax issues related to back income. He also regularly helps with foreclosure cases and back tax cases through the Nevada Legal Clinic. He has also volunteered with the tax court. In many of the tax cases Arlint takes, he says the clients are completely unaware of their options and do not have the monetary resources to figure out what kind of help or assistance they are eligible for. Arlint says a lot of the people in need of help are self-employed and, he explains, as the economy worsened, so did the tax issues of the self-employed. According to Arlint, when the economy began its decline in 2007, many self-employed people – the majority of whom wait until the end of the year to pay their taxes – were unable to pay taxes because they simply didn’t have the money. This problem began in 2007 and, for many, snowballed into an ongoing tax issue made worse by the continued decline in the economy. Arlint is a partner at the law firm of Armstrong and Arlint, which specialize in estate planning, IRS representation and short sales. Arlint obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Montana, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Nevada Reno and his juris doctorate from the Boyd Law School class of 2010.
BOLD honors multiple cases accepted and/or sessions conducted within the month.
