Reappointment of Magistrate Judge to be Considered

 
In August, 2013, United States District Court Judge George Foley, Jr.'s term as a magistrate judge will expire.  By law, the United States District Court is required to create a panel of citizens to consider reappointing Judge Foley to a new eight-year term with the court. 
 
The duties of a magistrate judge in this court are:
1.  Conduct preliminary proceedings in criminal cases;
2.  Trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases;
3.  Conduct various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from judges of the district court; and
4.  Trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants 
 
The members of the bar, as well as the public, are invited to submit written comments regarding whether Judge Foley should be reappointed to the panel no later than Friday, March 1, 2013.  Correspondence of this nature should be postmarked as confidential and should be sent to:
