Fastcase Online Legal Research
As of March
1, 2009, all active bar members have free electronic access
to Fastcase through the State Bar of
Nevada website. This includes unlimited use with no monthy,
hourly or time-based fees.
The service includes access to
Nevada caselaw, local federal rules, reporters, links to court forms, Attorney
General’s opinions, jury instructions, bankruptcy decisions,
ethics opinions and other information important to state bar
members.

1. Log in
To log in, go to
the State Bar of Nevada Members Login page:
http://www.nvbar.org/login.htm
Your username is “NV” followed by your bar
number (example: “NV####”). Your password will be the last
four digits of your Social Security number.
2. Click the Fastcase logo button on the
right side of the page to go to your custom Fastcase "Start
Page."
3. Start with quick searching.
At the top of the
page, you can get started with a Quick Caselaw search right
away – simply type in your search (using either keywords,
Boolean expressions or natural language searches) and hit
“Search.”
4. Try advanced searching.
Down the left-hand side of the
page, you will find a list of the different types of libraries
on Fastcase. Advanced Caselaw Search is a good place to start.
This search includes keyword, natural language and citation
searches, as well as powerful searching and sorting tools to
help you conduct research. Fastcase’s Advanced Caselaw Search
uses the standard terms and connectors you know from
traditional legal research, as well as “best case first”
technology that brings the best cases to the top of the list.
If you run an Advanced Caselaw
Search, you will notice that your results list displays the
most relevant paragraph of each case, so you know at a glance
whether the results fit well with your research, or whether
you should modify your search. Fastcase also uses citation
analysis that tells you how many times each case in the
results list has been cited – no more hunting and pecking to
find the seminal case! You can also click any of the column
headings to re-sort your results list – putting the list in
relevance order, date order, in order of precedential
authority and other options. Sorting your search results is a
powerful way to bring your best results to the top of your
list.
5. Help
