Senate Bill 451 established the Nevada Sentencing Commission to “identify and study the elements of this State’s system of criminal justice, including certain issues relating to the sentencing of persons convicted of felonies and gross misdemeanors.” The Board of Governors will appoint two members to the commission, pursuant to NRS 176, Section 6. The commission advises the Legislature on proposed legislation, evaluates the effectiveness and fiscal impact of various policies regarding sentencing and recommends changes in the structure of sentencing.
The Board of Governors will appoint representatives from the following backgrounds to serve a two-year term:
- A representative from the office of a county public defender; and
- An attorney in private practice experienced in defending criminal actions.
